Team Hoyt: A Race Powered by Love

In 1977, 15-year-old Rick Hoyt,

who was born with cerebral palsy and unable to walk or speak, asked his father, Dick, a simple yet profound question: “Dad, can we enter that race?” At the time, Dick was not a runner, and Rick had no way to physically participate in the race. But the power of a father’s love answered with a resounding yes.

Despite the odds, they crossed the finish line of that first 5-mile race, coming in last. But it was Rick’s words after the race that would change everything: “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.” From that moment on, a father and son team was born—Team Hoyt. What began as a single race turned into a lifelong mission, with Dick pushing Rick through over 1,000 races, including 32 Boston Marathons and 6 Ironman Triathlons.

Dick became Rick’s legs. He swam while towing Rick in a raft, biked with him in a custom seat, and ran mile after mile, pushing his son’s chair with unwavering determination. They didn’t compete for medals or trophies. Their race was a journey that transcended time, effort, and personal achievement. It was a testament to the strength of their bond, proving that love, perseverance, and commitment could break through the barriers of disability.Dick and Rick Hoyt's Inspirational Journey - Video

Their story wasn’t about winning—it was about showing the world that no obstacle is too great when you have the support of someone who loves you. It was about breaking down misconceptions, proving that physical limitations don’t define who you are or what you can achieve. The message was clear: when you don’t run alone, no finish line is impossible.

In 2021, Dick Hoyt passed away, followed by Rick in 2023. But their legacy lives on. Their story continues to inspire millions, reminding us all that love is the greatest force in overcoming life’s toughest challenges. Team Hoyt’s journey is more than just a father and son completing races—it’s about the power of love and the endless possibilities it creates.Isä työnsi poikaansa pyörätuolissa yli 1000 kisassa – antoivat toivoa ihmisille 40 vuoden ajan
