Balto: The Heroic Sled Dog Who Saved Nome, Alaska in the Great Serum Run of 1925

The Great Serum Run of 1925

Nome, Alaska was on the brink of disaster. A diphtheria outbreak was killing children, and the only cure was more than 1,000 km away, trapped behind frozen seas and grounded planes.

In a desperate race against death, 20 mushers and 150 sled dogs set out to deliver the life-saving serum. Battling –50°C blizzards, they faced impossible odds. But in the darkest storm, one unlikely hero emerged: Balto.

With bleeding paws and frozen fur, Balto carried the town’s last hope on his back. On February 2, he staggered into Nome, delivering the serum that saved hundreds of lives. The Great Serum Run and Balto's Enduring Legacy

Balto’s courage became legendary, and today, his heroic journey is immortalized in a bronze statue at Central Park, reminding us that sometimes, the bravest among us are the ones with paws.
