A Lion Cub and a Meerkat Form an Orphaned Friendship Straight Out of The Lion King

It sounds like something out of a Disney movie—but this unlikely friendship is as real as it gets. A lion cub named Zinzi and a spirited meerkat named Bob have formed an inseparable bond after both being orphaned in different ways.

Zinzi’s story began tragically. Just one day after she was born, her mother rejected her, leaving her without the care she needed to survive. Luckily, she was rescued by Marcell Tournier, a zoo and safari ranch owner in Sun City, South Africa. Marcell brought the fragile cub into his home, determined to give her a second chance at life.

Not long after, a cheeky meerkat named Bob wandered in. Much like Disney’s beloved Timon, Bob lives life on his own terms—dropping by whenever he feels like it, enjoying free meals, and bringing along a mischievous charm. Despite his carefree, “Hakuna Matata” lifestyle, Bob immediately took to the lion cub.

From that moment, the two became inseparable. They play together, nap side by side, and share an affection that has surprised everyone who sees them. Marcell affectionately describes Bob as Zinzi’s teacher in relaxation, noting: “Bob seems to have a Hakuna Matata philosophy and taught Zinzi how to let go and just enjoy life.”

Now, this real-life Simba and Timon duo delight visitors and animal lovers around the world, proving that friendship can grow in the most unexpected places—even between predator and prey.
