At the Sriracha Tiger Zoo in Thailand, a tigress named Sai Mai faced heartbreak when she lost her cubs shortly after giving birth. Like many mothers in the animal kingdom, she fell into mourning—restless, distressed, and grieving.

In an attempt to comfort her, zookeepers made an unusual choice: they introduced her to a litter of piglets, dressed in tiger-striped cloths to make them less intimidating.

To everyone’s surprise, Sai Mai welcomed them. Her maternal instincts awakened, and she began grooming, nursing, and protecting the tiny piglets as though they were her own. The piglets, in turn, accepted her warmth and safety, snuggling against the striped giant as if she had always been their mother.
