Rhett’s story is one of incredible resilience and unbreakable strength. From the moment he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in late 2021, his life was turned upside down. But even in the face of such a daunting diagnosis, Rhett never let go of his courage. He bravely faced rounds of grueling chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and the many challenges that came with his treatment.

What made his journey even more extraordinary was the selflessness of his older brother, Lane. Lane, who could have been just a bystander in his brother’s fight, instead stepped forward with a heart full of love and generosity. He donated his bone marrow to give Rhett a chance at life, becoming not just a brother, but a hero in his own right. Their bond is a testament to the deep love and sacrifice that siblings share, and Lane’s act of kindness became a lifeline that Rhett clung to during his battle.

But the battle wasn’t over yet. Rhett faced one complication after another, including a pulmonary hemorrhage and weeks on ECMO, a heart and lung machine that kept him alive when his body couldn’t do it on its own. For three weeks, he fought with every ounce of his strength, each day a testament to his will to live. Doctors and nurses were amazed at his resilience, and it was clear that his spirit could not be broken. Through it all, Rhett’s smile never faded. Even on the hardest days, his joy and determination were contagious, reminding everyone around him of the incredible power of hope.

Slowly, step by step, Rhett moved from the intensive care unit to a regular hospital room. His progress was nothing short of miraculous. And then came the day when he was able to leave the hospital and stay at the Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Charlotte, a place that became a sanctuary for his family during the most difficult time of their lives. There, Rhett continued his treatment for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), but it was a sign of his progress—he was on the road to recovery.

Finally, in the summer of 2022, Rhett returned home. The hospital visits were still a part of his journey, but there was something so powerful about being back in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Rhett’s story is more than just a story of illness—it’s a story of the incredible strength that children can show, even in the face of unimaginable odds. It’s a story of a family’s love, of a brother’s sacrifice, and of a little boy who refused to give up.
