Mother’s Heroic Sacrifice: Swerving to Save Foster Child in Terrifying Crash
Last Friday, Michele Bailey, 56, was driving with her daughter’s 3-year-old foster child when disaster struck. Another car, speeding and running a stop sign, was heading straight toward them. With nowhere to turn and traffic surrounding her, Michele made the split-second decision that any mother would — she swerved to ensure the crash would hit the front passenger side, protecting the toddler in the backseat.
The crash was violent. Her Lexus flipped three times, spinning uncontrollably. When it finally came to a stop, Michele was pinned inside, her body battered and broken. The little girl, shaken but alive, was dangling upside down in her car seat, still strapped in.
Michele suffered multiple injuries: a broken arm, sternum, ankle, and ribs, along with heavy bruising. The child’s leg was broken, but doctors believe she will recover. As bystanders rushed to help, they flipped the car upright until paramedics arrived.
From her hospital bed, Michele brushed off any talk of heroism. “I did what I could. And God was there to watch over us,” she said quietly.
A mother’s instinct. A child’s life spared. Michele’s selfless act of courage serves as a powerful reminder of the lengths a parent will go to protect those they love.
