A Moose in a Well: Maine Biologists to the Rescue!

Not every day at work involves sedating a stuck moose, but for wildlife biologists and game wardens in Maine, this week was anything but ordinary!

A landowner discovered a bull moose trapped in an old well on his property—one he hadn’t known existed—after hearing the distressed animal. Since Lassie wasn’t available for moose rescues, the professionals stepped in.

The team sedated the moose for safety and then carefully coordinated with wardens to extract him using heavy straps and an excavator. The process took several hours, but the moose was safely freed.

Once he woke up from sedation, the moose dashed off, unharmed—except perhaps for a bruised ego! This rescue is a reminder that wildlife work is never routine, and sometimes, even a day at the office can turn into a dramatic adventure.
