True Courage in Cleats: Auburn’s Alex McPherson
It may not make national headlines — but it should.
Auburn kicker Alex McPherson has been named a candidate for college football’s Courage Award, presented by the Football Writers Association of America and the Orange Bowl.
The award honors players who’ve shown exceptional bravery on or off the field — overcoming injury, hardship, or even saving others.
And Alex’s story defines courage.
After being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, Alex missed most of last season. In December, doctors removed his entire colon. His weight dropped to just 114 pounds — but he refused to give up.
Today, Alex is back on the field, kicking with a colostomy bag — and kicking strong. His determination, resilience, and faith have inspired teammates and fans alike.
Standing beside him through it all is his wife, Hannah, his greatest supporter and strength.
Maybe this story won’t lead the evening news —
but it should. Because this is what real courage looks like.
